Fallow Cane, Brush & Trash Burned in Haʻikū Fire

An evening brush fire burned an estimated five acres before it was brought under control on Tuesday night near the Valley Isle Memorial Park in Haʻikū.

Firefighters responded to the incident at 5:34 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17, 2016, following reports from passing motorists of heavy smoke in the area.

Pāʻia firefighters arrived at 5:49 p.m. to find about three acres of brush and fallow sugar cane burning on Hahana Road, about a half-mile makai of the Hāna Highway.

An engine, two water tankers, and the hazmat crew from Makawao, Wailea and Kahului were called in to assist with the fire.

Maui Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto said the fire blackened an area of brush, fallow cane, and trash before it was called under control at 7:02 p.m. and extinguished at 8:28 p.m.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. No structures were threatened and no injuries were reported.
