Kamehameha Schools Maui today announced the selection of Ulima Afoa as the school’s new head football coach.

The announcement was made by Hope Po̒o Kumu and Interim Athletic Director Leo Delatori who said Afoa brings a “wealth of experience in athletics at all levels.”

Afoa is currently the Athletic Academic Counselor at KS Maui, helping KSM student-athletes from many sports with balancing sports and academics and in making the transition to college. He was also the athletic director at St. Louis High School in Honolulu from 2008-10.

“We are excited to have Ulima Afoa work with our student-athletes at Kamehameha Schools Maui,” said Delatori. “He brings experience in coaching athletes at various levels of football. His focus on academic achievement, character building and fulfilling the mission of Kamehameha Schools will help to prepare our student-athletes for the next level and life beyond KSM”.

Along with his time as an administrator, Afoa has 32 years of coaching experience, including 20 years in the collegiate ranks at the University of Hawaiʻi and at San Diego State, his alma mater. In the high school ranks, Afoa was the first head football coach at Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi, from 2004-08, while also serving as an assistant coach at Campbell, Pac-5 and Steel Canyon in California.

Afoa graduated from San Diego State, where he was an all-WAC lineman, and prepped at St. Louis.
