Maui Arts & Cultural Center has selected Chadwick Pang as its new education director.

Pang succeeds Susana Browne, who will retire July 31 after 18 years with the center.

A graduate of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Pang holds a BA in music, an MA in ethnomusicology and a post baccalaureate certificate in secondary education, which focused on melding core curricula together with arts integration and special education integration to build holistic courses of study.

Pang, an educator and musician, comes to The MACC from PA‘I Foundation in Honolulu, where he was program manager and music director. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, PA‘I Foundation was founded in 2001 with a mission to empower the Native Hawaiian community through the preservation and perpetuation of Hawaiian art and culture. It is the nonprofit arm of Pua Aliʻi ʻIlima, a hālau hula founded in 1977 by kumu hula, Victoria Holt Takamine.

As the state’s most comprehensive nonprofit multi-disciplinary arts facility, nearly 4.7 million people have been served by the center’s activities since 1994.

The MACC has developed a statewide and national identity through its performing arts, visual arts and arts education programs. As an educational resource, The MACC serves all ages from pre-school to adults, enhancing arts education in schools as well as professional development for classroom teachers.

Based on significant research that arts education is vital for every child, The MACC works closely with national and local teaching artists to develop arts integration curriculum which meets common core standards.

Research shows that arts integration prepares students for the future by developing valuable life skills: collaboration, creativity, innovation, critical thinking and communication.

In 1995, The MACC partnered with the Hawai‘i Department of Education-Maui District to become the state’s first and most recognized team affiliated with the prestigious national network, Partners in Education, a program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.
