Maui Gets First Self-Supply Home Battery Install

Rising Sun Solar has installed the first self-supply home battery system on Maui.

Rising Sun installed the system for Kitty Walsh, mother of celebrity Maui-based surfer Ian Walsh, at her new Ha‘ikū residence.

Walsh is the first Maui resident installed under Maui Electric Company’s new Customer Self-Supply Program (CSS).

\Walsh chose Rising Sun’s option that allows her to get both solar panels and the battery for no money down and receive significant savings on her energy costs.

“Hawai‘i’s path toward 100% renewable energy will require us to store some of the solar energy produced during the day,” said Rising Sun Co-owner Brad Albert. “Home batteries enable customers to produce energy during the day and use it at night. It’s a pioneering technology that can also add resilience and adaptability to the utility grid.”

“The new CSS program provides a welcome solution for customers previously denied solar applications by the utility,” said Walsh. “In the past, the utility refused many customers’ applications, often with the explanation that the ‘circuit was saturated.'”

”Our family is excited to participate in the Customer Self Supply Program,” said Walsh. “The system was financed by Sunrun, and we did not pay for installation, or start-up costs, and will be saving on monthly electrical bills. An added benefit of the Tesla Powerwall is backup power in the event of a power
outage.”

Starting with the seventh photovoltaic installation on Maui in 2003, Rising Sun is today the largest solar energy company in state with offices on Maui, Hawai‘i Island, O‘ahu and Kaua‘i.

Rising Sun partners with Sunrun to offer home solar for little or no money down, and is a Tesla Powerwall Certified Installer on Maui.
