Registration Now Open for 2016 Adidas Hoops Coaches Clinics

The Maui Jim Maui Invitational and Chaminade University will host two clinics as part of the 2016 Adidas Hoops Clinics presented by HMSA. Registration is open for the clinics, which will be held on Maui on October 20 and in Honolulu on October 23.

The clinics are designed for high school, middle school and community basketball coaches. Longtime college and NBA coach Tony Barone, Maui Jim Maui Invitational Tournament Chairman Dave Odom, Chaminade men’s basketball coach Eric Bovaird and Chaminade women’s basketball coach Bobby Keanini will offer basketball instruction to participants, including game strategies, management styles and best practices.

Tony Barone spent nine years as an assistant coach at Bradley and Duke, where he also played from 1965-1968. He assumed the head coaching duties at Creighton from 1985-1991, where we won more than 100 games and appeared in two NCAA Tournaments. Following that, he spent seven years at Texas A&M, where he coached the Aggies in the 1994 Maui Jim Maui Invitational. A member of the Chicagoland Sports and Creighton University Sports Hall of Fame, Barone spent two seasons as an ESPN analyst before spending 13 seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies organization, including a stint as the interim head coach during the 2006-07 season.

Dave Odom: Before becoming the Tournament Chairman for the Maui Jim Maui Invitational in 2009, Odom made a name for himself among the college coaching ranks. Odom is a four-time conference coach of the year, winning ACC Coach of the Year honors in 1991, 1994 and 1995 while at Wake Forest, and SEC Coach of the Year laurels in 2004 at South Carolina. While with the Demon Deacons, Odom recruited and coached two-time NBA MVP Tim Duncan. Odom’s Maui Jim Maui Invitational roots go back to 1982, where he was an assistant on the Virginia squad that was upset by Chaminade, leading to the creation of the premier college basketball event.

Eric Bovaird enters his sixth season at the helm of Chaminade with 71 victories, which is tied for third in program history. He led the Silverswords to the 2014 Pacific West Conference Tournament Championship and the team’s second straight NCAA Tournament berth, the first time the program had earned consecutive postseason appearances.

Bobby Keanini returns for his seventh season at Chaminade. Under his watch, the program has seen steady improvement. A season ago, the team won five PacWest Conference games, following a program-record seven conference wins during the 2014-15 season. Before coming to Chaminade, Keanini spent 16 years as head coach of Roosevelt High School in Honolulu.

Who: Community, high school and middle school basketball coaches

The 2016 Adidas Hoops Clinics presented by HMSA is made possible with support from Adidas, HMSA, the Boys and Girls Club of Hawaiʻi and the County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation along with Pepsi Hawaiʻi, Foodland, the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority and the Maui Visitors and Convention Bureau.

The 2016 Maui Jim Maui Invitational field features traditional powers and perennial championship contenders: Georgetown, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Tennessee, UConn, Wisconsin and host Chaminade. The teams have combined for 15 trips to the Final Four and have won six national championships since 1999 alone.
