State Receives $422,000 in Federal Ag Grants

The State of Hawai‘i has been awarded 10 federal grants totaling more than $422,000 this coming year through the 2016 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program of the US Department of Agriculture.
The federal program provides grants to state departments of agriculture to fund projects that enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops, such as fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture and nursery crops.
The Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture submitted the grant applications and will be administering the program.
The approved grants include projects for research and to increase taro, breadfruit and other specialty crop production, farmer education and agricultural marketing programs.
The SCBGP awarded a total of about 700 grants amounting to more than $62 million nationwide.
