Unexploded Ordnance Found at Maui Storage Facility

The Kīhei Maui Self Storage facility is closed due to the discovery on Thursday afternoon, of a piece of unexploded ordnance in a storage unit.

The incident was reported at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016 at the facility, located at 115 East Līpoa Street.

Maui police say a renter was cleaning out his storage unit when he found a small unexploded ordnance in a metal container that was left behind by the previous renter.  The container was marked as US military and the ordnance appeared to be an old hand grenade, according to police reports.

Police evacuated the building and closed off the surrounding area. No roads or nearby businesses were affected by the closure.

The US Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was notified and made an assessment.  The EOD team will schedule a flight to Maui in order to dispose of the ordnance.

In the meantime, Maui police continue to close off the building.
