As of Nov. 29, 2016, the Maui County Civil Defense Agency has been officially renamed the Maui County Emergency Management Agency.

The name change was directed by voters who chose to change the agency’s title via charter amendment during the Nov. 8 General Election for the State of Hawaiʻi.

The Federal Civil Defense Act of 1950 is obsolete and has been replaced by the federal emergency management system.  The name change brings the agency into conformity with nationwide and statewide practices in emergency management.

The change will be reflected in the coming months on all official county documents in print and online.
