Maui Highlights: Snapple Girls Basketball State Championships
The Kamehameha School Maui Warriors defeated Leilehua 33 to 31 on Monday night in the Division I First Round Regionals of the Snapple Girls Basketball State Championships.
The game was played at home for the Warriors at the Pukalani campus on Maui. KS Maui advances to play #1 Konawaena in Game #7 at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2 at McKinley. This is KS Maui’s second D1 appearance in as many years.
The Division I tournament for both the boys and girls will see a new format with the league runner-ups hosting the first round of the tournament at their respective home courts. The winner of those games will move on to the three-day tournament in Honolulu.
The Division I tournament tipped off Monday, Jan. 30. The winners advance to the final three days of the tournament on Oʻahu, Thursday, February 2 through Saturday, February 4. Maui teams competing in the DI bracket are KS Maui and Lahainaluna.
Number 3 Lahainaluna is scheduled to play in Game #5 at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, at Moanalua against Mililani, who defeated Hilo 43-33 in Game #4 on Monday. The DI Quarterfinal game will be broadcast on OC16. This is the 26th D1 appearance for Lahainaluna, the most of any team in this year’s field. This is the Lunas second time named #3 seed, but they are ranked second overall for most times (16) a school was seeded.
The Division II tournament will go on with the traditional four-day format beginning Wednesday, Feb. 1, running through Saturday, Feb. 4. Maui teams competing in the DII bracket are the Seabury Hall Spartans and the Lānaʻi Pinelasses.
This is Seabury Hall’s first appearance since 2012. Number 3 Seabury is scheduled to play in Game #10 at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, at Farrington against the winner of Wednesday’s St. Francis/Waipahu game.
Lānaʻi plays in Game 1 of the DII bracket at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at Kalani against Damien. The winner of that game will advance to play against #1 Mid-Pacific on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017.
