Baldwin and Seabury Play Today in Girls Soccer State Tourney

It’s a new season, but the 2017 Queen’s Medical Center Girls Soccer State Championships is looking a lot like last year’s with 80% of the field returning, including the order of finish for most leagues.

The one thing that makes this year’s Division I tournament different is a new format to mix things up. The runner‐up from each league had the benefit of hosting a first‐round match on their respective home fields on Monday, Jan. 30.  The winner of these matches move on to the remaining three‐day tournament at Waipiʻo Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oʻahu, continuing Thursday, Feb. 2 through Saturday, Feb. 4.

On Maui, two teams made it into the Division I bracket: Baldwin Bears (11‐0‐1) and the Kamehameha Maui Warriors (8‐3‐1).  Number 3 Baldwin is scheduled to play Pearl City at 7 p.m. tonight. 

The Division II remains the traditional four‐day tournament format with all matches being played at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oʻahu. Three‐time defending state champion Hawaiʻi Prep, faces off against familiar foes as well. The ILH, BIIF, MIL and KIF are sending the exact same representatives as last year. The OIA champion and third place Waipahu and Radford, respectively, and the ILH runner‐up Sacred Hearts are the “newcomers.”

The only Maui team competing in the Division II bracket is Seabury Spartans who came into the tournament with a (3‐6‐1) record.  Seabury defeated Kauaʻi 3-2 on Wednesday, and advances to play #4 Waipahu today at 3 p.m.

Three of the Seabury girls are also competing in the Snapple Girls Basketball State Championships also taking place on Oʻahu this week.
