Award-winning geobiologist, Dr. Hope Jahren, will make a rare Maui appearance at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on Friday, April 7 at 7 p.m. in the McCoy Studio Theater.

Dr. Jahren is best known for her best-selling and science memoir “Lab Girl,” and is the recipient of three Fulbright Awards. She is also one of four scientists, and the only woman, to have been awarded both of the Young Investigator Medals given within the Earth Sciences.

Her research focuses on discovering the secrets hidden in fossilized plant life. She was profiled by Popular Science magazine in 2006 as one of its “Brilliant 10” scientists, and was a 2013 Leopold Fellow at Stanford University’s Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. In 2016, Time Magazine named her one of the world’s “100 Most Influential People.”

She was a tenured professor at the University of Hawaiʻi in Honolulu from 2008 to 2016, where she built the Isotope Geobiology Laboratories, with support from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. She now holds the J. Tuzo Wilson professorship at the University of Oslo, Norway.

“To have such a brilliant scientist joining us here on Maui is a great honor,” said Merwin Conservancy Executive Director Jason Denhart. “I know that many in our community of friends and neighbors really enjoyed Lab Girl, and Iʻm sure they will be equally as inspired to hear from the author in person.”

The event will be followed by a courtyard reception with a book signing and chance to meet Dr. Jahren.
