Aparna Ramaswamy by Christopher Pike.

A solo dance work by Aparna Ramaswamy, co-artistic director of the Minneapolis-based Ragamala Dance Co. comes to Maui on Thursday, March 9, 2017.

The work entitled “They Rose at Dawn” is accompanied by a live musical ensemble.

In this solo dance work, women are depicted as carriers of ritual. Navigating inner and outer worlds, they invoke a sense of reverence, of unfolding mystery, of imagination.

A Carnatic musical ensemble, music commonly associated with the southern India, accompanies Aparna Ramaswamy as she explores the spontaneous interplay between music and movement and the dynamic contours created by the artists onstage.

Under the direction of the mother and daughter team of Ranee Ramaswamy and Aparna Ramaswamy, Ragamala Dance Company’s work explores the dynamic tension between the ancestral and the personal.

As choreographers and performers, Ranee and Aparna create dance landscapes that dwell in opposition — secular and spiritual life, inner and outer worlds, human and natural concerns, rhythm and stillness — to find the transcendence that lies in between.

As mother and daughter, each brings her generational experience to the work — the rich traditions, deep philosophical roots, and ancestral wisdom of India meeting and merging with their hybridic perspective as Indian-American artists.

The performance is scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 9 in Castle Theater.

Tickets are $35, $45 plus applicable fees. Members of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center receive a 10% discount. Available at the MACC Box Office, by phone at 242-SHOW (7469) or online at MauiArts.org.
