26th Annual Keawalaʻi Congregational Church Lūʻau

“Hoʻi au i ka nani o Mākena: I return to the beauty of Mākena” is the theme for the 26th Annual Keawalaʻi Congregational Church Lūʻau, that will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the grounds of the church.

Information on the koholā or humpback whales that return to Maui each year will shared with residents and visitors during the event.

The lūʻau will feature Hawaiian food as well as musicians and dancers. Food service begins at noon.

The Leinani Trio featuring Lois Whitney, Shem Kahawaiʻi and Anthony Pfluke will open the athering.

Kumu hula Hōkūlani Holt-Padilla and the haumana of Hālau Pāʻū O Hiʻiaka will be one of two hālau hula featured at this year’s event.

It is through hula that one can learn about cultural protocol, plants, chants, and stories as well as Hawaiian values and philosophies, health practices, adornments, clothing and more.

Kumu hula Uluwehi Guerrero and the haumana of Hālau Hula Kauluokalā return to Mākena once more. “We are a traditional school of hula located in Kahului, Maui. We educate and instill the values of Hawaiian culture through language, chant and dance,” said Guerrero.

“Our goal,” he said, “ is to build self-confidence with greater understanding and connection to our ancestral ways. Thus with a strong foundation through education, we will ensure an enduring pride in Hawaiian culture.”
