Maui Humane Society Veterinary Clinic Expansion Complete

Thanks to a $260,000 grant from PetSmart Charities, the Maui Humane Society has renovated and expanded their veterinary clinic and is now able to accommodate more animal surgeries daily than before.

Veterinarian Dr. Lisa Labrecque said that the facilities before were very cramped, and the expansion added approximately 700 square feet to the vet and spay/neuter clinic.

Also thanks to the grant, Mauians can receive high quality spay and neuters for their dogs and cats at no charge. Such a service from a private vet would cost close to $300.

The Maui Humane Society hopes to perform the services on up to 7,000 animals in the coming year, with a special Mobile Animal Surgical Hospital or MASH event specifically for cats to be held from April 25-29, 2017.

PetSmart Charities organized in 1994 and has since given out $300 million dollars in grants across the nation. Chief Administrative Officer Roger Haston said they are “very committed to communities and creating connections and bonds between pets and people.” Haston was among those who were impressed with the new Maui facilities.

Recently, the Maui Humane Society also underwent an overall renovation. There are also several bonding huts, where potential pet owners and shelter animals can hang out to see if they are compatible.

Also effective this month, the animal shelter will no longer take in animals through overnight drop-off kennels. Instead, all stray and owner-surrendered animals must be brought in to the shelter during normal business hours, Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. In case of an emergency, the MHS Humane Enforcement can be called for pick up of a stray animal.
