County Reopens Kepaniwai Park at ʻĪao

The County of Maui’s Kepaniwai Park at ʻĪao reopens on Monday, April 10, 2017, according to a Parks Department announcement.

The park underwent major repairs following flooding in September, 2016 that caused heavy damage to areas at both the County and State parks in ʻĪao Valley.  The state facility remains closed.

Park hours at Kepaniwai will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Park pavilions and the lower restroom will be open; the upper restroom will be available later next week.

ʻĪao Valley State Monument in the upper section of the valley will remain closed as the State continues conducting damage assessments, clean-up and repairs.  State officials have said that the plan to reopen the state facility to modified access sometime this summer.

A website posting by the State Division of Land and Natural Resources reminds the public that anyone found within the closed State park is in violation of HAR 13-146-4, which is a petty misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
