More than 5,000 people welcomed Oprah Winfrey to her very first appearance on Maui as she lead a special conversation designed to inspire Hawaiʻi residents – already ranked the healthiest state in the nation by the Gallup-Sharecare Well-Being Index – to lead even healthier, happier, more productive lives.

The event, entitled “Live Your Best Life,” was presented by the Hawai‘i Medical Service Association, Hawaiʻi’s leading health plan, and Sharecare, the nation’s leading digital health company that helps people manage all their health in one place.

Winfrey opened up the event shedding some laughter on the thought of offering advice to residents saying, “They wanted me to come here to talk about living your best life and being healthier… and I go, how do you tell the people who already live in the best place in the world?  What do I look like, trying to tell you all, who have sense enough to move here, live here, raise your families… what do I look like telling you how to live your best life?  I could take a few lessons from you,” she said.  “I was just grateful that I had sense enough to get myself here.”

Much of her talk focused on the power of intentions and gratitude.  “I learned that when you use the energy of why you really were born–why you were created–in service to something that’s bigger than yourself, goodness and greatness comes to you, because that’s where the real power lies… when you can use your personality to serve the energy of your soul,” she said.

During the event, Winfrey also engaged in a question-and-answer session moderated by Jeff Arnold, Sharecare’s co-founder and chief executive officer.  Arnold said that just in the last week alone, Sharecare had tens-of-thousands of people download the app.  He said the goal is to have all residents across eight islands to become Sharecare members and invest in the management of their health and well-being.

“I started WebMD back in 1998, and at that time, the idea was–health needed a home page.  As we fast forward to 2017, we look at the smartphone and say, we potentially are holding the greatest healing device that we ever have seen.  And just like I don’t have 12 apps to manage my money, I’m not going to have 12 apps to manage my health,” said Arnold during an exclusive Maui Now interview.

“I think the message that Mrs. Winfrey gave us today about being more intentional, about gratitude is what the app is all about.  It’s an effort to put all your health in one place–to live your healthiest, happiest and most productive life,” said Arnold.

HMSA’s Chief Executive Officer Michael A. Gold also commented saying, “Having Ms. Winfrey share her powerful message to empower and motivate Hawaiʻi residents is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and an incredibly special event that we’re proud to bring to Maui… We know that her ability to inspire will be a huge boost to our efforts to advance health and well-being across Hawaiʻi.”

Together, Sharecare and HMSA are accelerating the transformation of health and well-being in Hawaiʻi through innovative solutions. Blue Zones Project, Ornish Lifestyle Medicine, and now the launch of the Sharecare platform are just a few innovations that Sharecare and HMSA have brought to the state.

Over the last four months, HMSA and Sharecare have already welcomed accredited health expert, best-selling author, and world renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz, and CNN’s chief medical correspondent and neurosurgeon Dr. Sanjay Gupta to Hawaiʻi to help spread the word on how technology is making it easier for people to engage in their own health.

Tickets to “Live Your Best Life” were available exclusively through a sweepstakes from HMSA and Sharecare.
