The County of Maui announced that due to continued heavy smoke from a fire that broke out yesterday afternoon, and with current conditions and wind picking up, the Central Maui Landfill is expected to remain closed today.

County officials said, “It is estimated the county will not be able to open the landfill or green waste operations today at all, and will re-open on Monday normal schedule.”

Officials say the EKO Compost Fire is almost under control, however for safety reasons Maui County can’t open the landfill or the green waste drop off area because heavy smoke has spread over landfill roads making it difficult to see or breathe.

Maui fire fighters, EKO compost water trucks and Central Maui landfill water trucks are still on-site and actively fighting the fire.
