Maui Celebrates Forensic Science, Sept. 19

In recognition of the role that forensic science plays in the investigation of crimes throughout the nation, several professional organizations are sponsoring a National Forensic Science Week, Sept. 17-23, 2017.

As part of the, observance, the Maui Police Department will be hosting Maui County’s First Forensic Science Day on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017 at the County’s Forensic Facility at The Millyard in Wailuku. The event will begin with a mayoral proclamation at 8:30 a.m.

Maui County’s forensic science high school students will then join county officials on tours of the Forensic Facility. The department will provide educational exhibits for students, highlighting existing crime scene investigation tools and exploring future forensic technologies.

Students from the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College’s Administration of Justice Program will also be on hand to assist in hands-on activities.

The week-long observance is held to recognize the importance of federal forensic legislation, national committees, increased demands for forensic analysis and the significant impact that forensic science has on the criminal justice system.

The forensics field and its scientific and technical professionals are credited with using their skills in both exonerating the innocent and identifying the guilty.
