The County of Maui Mayor’s Office of Economic Development hosts a series of free workshops for the month of October. Workshops are presented at the Maui County Business Resource Center, a County of Maui facility, located in the Maui Mall across Pizza Hut, in Suite B-9.

Seating for all workshops is limited, and all workshops are subject to change or cancellation. Workshops are free unless noted otherwise. To reserve a seat, call the Maui County Business Resource Center at (808) 270-5770. The following workshops are available:

Investing in Our Children’s Development from Toddler To Teens – Parent Workshop
Instructor: Vanessa Valencia & Donna Ginoza
Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017 – Noon to 1 p.m.

In this workshop parents and caregivers will explore new ways to support their child’s physical, emotional, social and cognitive development. Participants will explore how to build resilience, self-esteem, life-skills, communication and well-being through modalities of nature, expressive arts and mindfulness. Instructors will explain these approaches and how they can support the needs of each age level. Parents and caregivers will receive practical activities and ideas that can help support children at home, school and the community.

Vanessa Valencia has a Master of Arts in Teaching in Early Childhood Education along with a Montessori Primary credential. She is an author and speaker as well as a collaborator for the United Nations Academic Impact. She has devoted her life towards the children and is dedicated to creating quality and value-based books and programs to empower children’s hearts and spirits along with supporting them to become compassionate, peaceful and conscious global citizens. Donna Ginoza is a credentialed elementary and middle school teacher with training in somatic-based expressive arts. She is a graduate of the Tamalpa Institute, a groundbreaking program for work in expressive arts, and studied with Jamie McHugh, creator of Embodied Mindfulness. Her passion is to inspire children to appreciate the natural environment and expand their creativity through movement and the expressive arts.

Business in the Think Tank with MBB Members (Free)
Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017 – Noon to 2 p.m.

Maui Business Brainstormers invites participants to bring business challenges to the Brainstorming Segment or feature their business (or business concept) in the “Think Tank” segment, submit a form on the MBB meetup site, or come along to brainstorm and be showered with ideas. Features include mingling and introductions, opportunities to interact with new faces and strengthen your own ability to communicate succinctly with others in fast-paced situations; Featured Business in the Think Tank, a 20-minute segment in which a selected business is featured for focused brainstorming with the group; owners of startups and small businesses benefit from this activity. You are qualified if you are an MBB member and have a business concept fully researched and planned but with questions or obstacles remaining, or if you are a business already in operation with sales, but facing challenges to achieve further growth. To be featured in the 20-minute case-study “Think Tank,” fill out and submit the online form describing your business challenge. On the day of the meeting, the candidate chosen will present a five minute overview of the business, including the current challenges. The audience then brainstorms on ideas to address the problem area with the “build it, measure it, learn from it, improve it!” spirit. To attend, RSVP here.

The 90-Day Success Plan for MusicPreneurs and Musicians – Workshop
Instructor: Danelle “Dee” Harvey
Oct. 11, 2017 – Noon to 1 p.m.

This workshop is for musicians that dream of creating amazing success within 90-days or less. Whether you’d like to build or grow your e-mail list, focus on boosting your current income, make your first bit of income from your music, increase your visibility, get some exposure, make sales of your products, get more shows and get your time back to actually create music whilst doing all of this magical career boosting stuff, in this workshop participants will go over the basics to take you from overwhelm, or stagnant to getting results. Attendees will learn how to influence their success rate and, in turn, improve their life.
The instructor will cover the basics on how to: create a clear music career success plan based on your success goals, achieve your goal without overwhelm, clear that impossible schedule and create a streamlined and manageable one, actually do set tasks and marketing and still have time to create music and have a life.
Danelle “Dee” Harvey is an accomplished professional singer & recording artist, published songwriter/composer, musician, actress, teacher and vocal coach. She set up music biz success consultancy and training Female MusicPreneur International for musicians and businesses, sharing her strategies and music business knowledge on setting up correctly to make money, copyright, royalties, music licensing, branding, and ways to increase revenue streams through smart marketing on and off-line.

Beyond the Business Plan – Six Key Strategies to Take Your Business from Good to Great

Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017 – Noon to 1 p.m.

Many new businesses fail because the owners have not put effective organizational and management strategies in place; due to lack of knowledge or understanding of how important they are to the bottom line. In this workshop, participants will look at six basic and important areas in leadership, service and accountability that, with the right approach and mindset, will help you and your business flourish. This workshop is designed to get you thinking about how you both measure up, and give you resources for implementing positive and profitable changes. Leslie Couch is a small business owner herself, offering accounting and bookkeeping services, consulting and coaching to fellow entrepreneurs since 1998. Prior to starting her business, she enjoyed an 18 year career in the banking industry in branch management and commercial lending, including SBA financing.

Pricing Your Ag and Value Added Product
Instructor: Richard “Buddy” Nichols
Thursday, October 19, 2017 – Noon to 1:30 p.m.

This workshop is for anyone thinking of becoming a farmer, considering developing a value added product or looking to create a financial sustainable business. In this workshop, Buddy Nichols will help participants achieve what they want out of life. He will focus on assisting analyze the valuation of your product to make sure you receive what you and your product are worth. He will help investigate all of the resources that are currently available to you and provide information on how to best utilize these resources in order to become a successful Ag businessperson. Nichols is the USDA Farm Loan Manager on Maui. He has a BA in Animal Science and an MBA in accounting. He is a fourth generational farmer who has owned/managed cattle, fruits, vegetables, as well as processed and marketed value added agricultural related products.

Living Your Life Alive In Business – Learning to Listen and Follow Your Inner Nudge
Instructor: Autumn Shields
Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017 – Noon to 1 p.m. (Q&A til 1:30)

This workshop will focus on how to notice when you are getting overwhelmed, how to delegate what you are not good at, and how to identify what your passion is. In addition, you will learn how to listen to you “inner nudge” when making decisions and moving towards the next level.

Autumn Shields is an international speaker, author, coach, and entrepreneur. After working as a victim advocate director for police departments in Colorado, Autumn became a successful network marketer and is the author of the book, Living Your Life Alive. This allowed her to move to Maui where she developed a self-discovery program, The Makoa Project high-risk teens.

The ABC’s of a Business Plan

Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017 – Noon to 1 p.m.

Maui Economic Opportunity Business Development Center’s Core Four Business Planning is a 36-hour course on how to write a business plan while providing the information you need to know in order to start, operate and grow your business. This workshop is a one hour introductory workshop which will provide you with a better understanding of the course outline for the Core Four Business Planning.
David Daly, Director of the MEO Business Development Center, will discuss the numerous reasons for writing a sound business plan. He has more than 25 years of experience in business ownership, financing, education and economic development. His background includes residential lending and being a Financial Industry Regulatory Authority-licensed financial advisor. Participants will receive an outline of the business plan taught by MEO’s Core Four

Quickbooks for Small Business – Hands-on computer training for beginners
Instructor: Richard Kehoe, CPA
Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017 – 5-8 p.m.

Learn to set up your company’s QuickBooks in a small class setting with personalized tutoring. This class is for new users and will teach you how to record sales, receive payments, prepare invoices and balance your checkbook.
