Maui Police Administer Naloxone, First Documented Use of Narcan Kit by MPD

For the first time since deploying NARCAN kits to their front-line officers, the Maui Police Department recorded its first documented use of the kit in the field by one of its officers.

On Saturday, June 2, 2018 at around 3:10 p.m., Wailuku Patrol officers responded to a call for an unresponsive male in his vehicle within a parking lot off of Makawao Avenue.

The male was reportedly turning blue.  Upon arrival, officers were unable to wake the male and observed him to be exhibiting signs and symptoms consistent with an opiate overdose, according to department reports.

The male appeared to have trouble breathing at which time an officer administered one nasal unit of Naloxone (NARCAN) to the male.

Within approximately 20 seconds, police report the male became responsive and began breathing normally. Within two minutes the male was able to stand up and speak with officers, according to department reports.

Medics treated the male and released him at the scene.

The Maui Police Department recently trained their officers on the administering of Naloxone and deployed 200 NARCAN kits to their front-line officers.
