BREAKING: Maui Police Respond to Fugitive Barricade Situation in Wailuku

A man, described by Maui police as a wanted fugitive, surrendered to authorities without further incident this afternoon.

At around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, the Maui Police Department’s Special Response Team approached a unit within the Hale Makana o Waiʻale housing complex, where the individual was located.

The individual, who’s name is being withheld pending further investigation, voluntarily surrendered to police, according to department officials.  There are no reports of injuries at this time.

Maui police responded to the scene following a report at 11:45 a.m. indicating that the fugitive was allegedly operating a stolen vehicle in the area.  Police located the vehicle and also located the fugitive in one of the units at the complex.

Police evacuated the area surrounding the unit as a safety precaution while they conducted an investigation.

An investigation is underway at the Hale Makana O Waiʻale housing complex in Wailuku, where officers this morning were informed of the possible whereabouts of a wanted fugitive.

Police say they received reports of the fugitive at the location allegedly operating a stolen vehicle in the area at around 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday July 25, 2018.

Police say they were able to locate the vehicle while conducting checks in the area. Officers were also able to locate the fugitive in one of the units at the housing complex.

For safety reasons police have evacuated the area surrounding the unit.  At this time it is unclear whether any weapons are involved.

Officers are still on scene and say the situation is under an active investigation.
