$1.5 M to Purchase New Clean Buses, Improve Public Transit

Hawai‘i, Kaua‘i, and Maui Counties will receive $1.5 million from the Federal Transit Administration to purchase or lease new zero or low-emission transit buses.

The announcement was made today by US Senator Brian Schatz, who serves as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

“Investing in new clean buses means that the many residents on Hawai‘i Island, Kaua‘i, and Maui who depend on public transit to get to school or work every day will continue to have an affordable, reliable way to get around,” said Senator Schatz. “This federal funding will help ease traffic congestion and cut commute times, all while reducing carbon pollution.”

The grant, which was awarded due to the joint efforts of the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation and the counties of Hawai‘i, Kaua‘i, and Maui, will also help fund the facilities and equipment necessary to maintain the new fleet.
