No Tsunami Threat to Hawai‘i After 6+ Japan Quake

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi after a preliminary magnitude 6.7 earthquake reported at 8:07 a.m. HST on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018 in the Hokkaido region of Japan.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says that based on all available data, a destructive, Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.

The USGS reports that the quake occurred at a depth of 39 km and was located: 19.5 mi ESE of Chitose, Japan; 20.7 mi ENE of Tomakomai, Japan; 29.1 mi SE of Kitahiroshima, Japan; 31.5 mi NW of Shizunai-furukawachō, Japan; and 41.6 mi SE of Sapporo, Japan.
