Honokohau Flooding Prompts Search

Maui fire crews responded to reports of persons unaccounted for as flash flooding occurred in Honokohau Valley at approximately 3:11 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018.

Three crews on the ground as well as Rescue 10 aboard the Department’s Air 1 helicopter responded and began the search for two individuals. Authorities say friends believed to two unaccounted individuals to be missing.

A FEMA Urban Search and Rescue team was also stood up and ready to respond if needed.

A search and investigation could not confirm anyone in distress.

At approximately 5 p.m., crews were able to make contact (by phone) with the individuals in question. They were confirmed safe and not actually in the area.

According to fire crews on scene, there was confirmed flooding within the valley and possible damage sustained to homes.
