The Maui AIDS Foundation will host an event in honor of World AIDS Day 2018 on Saturday, Dec. 1, at ʻĪao United Church of Christ (ʻIao Congregational Church) in Wailuku. The event will begin at 3 p.m. and will be free for the general public. Parking is free and appetizers and refreshments will be provided.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of World AIDS Day (#WAD2018), which takes place on the first day of December each year worldwide. The day is recognized as the first ever global health day for people to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses.

“This year’s World AIDS Day theme is #KnowYourStatus,” Maui AIDS Foundation executive director Mark Anderson said. “Getting tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections gives you the knowledge to protect yourself and your partners. We urge everyone in Maui County to join the initiative and learn their HIV status. Now is the time to take the test, take control and #KnowYourStatus.”

Established in 1987 as Maui County’s only AIDS Service Organization, the Maui AIDS Foundation provides services for individuals living with HIV/AIDS along with outreach and education. The foundation also provides confidential and free testing for HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis on an appointment basis at (808) 242-4900. The foundation operates from 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.
