Maui County Unemployment Rate at 2.3%

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations announced that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Maui County was 2.3% in December. Maui Countyʻs seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 2.6% in November and 1.8% in December 2017.

The DLIR also announced that the stateʻs seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in December was 2.5%, compared to 2.4% in November. Statewide, 16,900 residents were unemployed in December. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the US was 3.9 percent in December, compared to 3.7% in November.

According to the DLIR, initial claims decreased 3% and weeks claims decreased 9.4% for unemployment benefits from a year ago. Over-the-month, initial claims increased by 10% and weeks claims increased by 0.2% in December.

These unemployment rate figures for the State of Hawaiʻi and the US are seasonally adjusted based on US Bureau of Labor Statistics standards. The not seasonally adjusted rate for the state was 2.3% in December, compared to 2.6% in November.

In a separate measure of employment, the state gained 1,100 more jobs from November to December. Among the major sectors, leisure and hospitality, construction, education and health services, manufacturing, and other services all saw job gains. Employment in trade, transportation, and utilities, information, and financial activities remained stable.

The professional and business services sector experienced job losses. Government lost 1,400 jobs, mostly from the release of general election workers.  Compared to one year ago, total non-agricultural jobs expanded by 1.4%.
