An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 has occurred southeastern Peru on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019, at 10:51 p.m. There was no tsunami threat to the state of Hawai‘i because the quake was to deep.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake hit in the Andes region in a sparsely populated area.

The US Geological Survey said the epicenter was at a depth of 160 miles. The agency said most big quakes in South America occur at a maximum depth of about 40 miles.

Rocks were reported falling onto roads, but without any damage to persons or material damage,” the National Emergency Operations Center said several hours after the quake.

Last week, a 7.5-magnitude quake measuring in Ecuador rattled the coast and Amazon region of northern Peru, leaving nine people injured and causing damage in Ecuador, but not in Peru.

Peru is located in a seismically active region; on Jan. 14, 2018, a 7.3-magnitude quake killed two people and toppled buildings near the southern city of Arequipa.
