A five-member team from Maui High School won the regional Ocean Sciences competition over the weekend at the UH Manoa Campus Center on Oahu.

The team, coached by Edwin Ginoza, competed against 16 teams in the Aloha Bowl event.

They now advance to the 15^th Annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl to be held in April 19-22, 2012, in Baltimore, Maryland.  The competition will feature 24 other regional teams

The winning Maui team includes members: Steven Okada, Ashley Vidad, Bryson Galapon, Gabriel Salazar and Min Sung Kim.

“Congratulations to all the students participating in the 2012 NOSB regional competitions as they contribute so much to this important program in the field of ocean science,” said Robert B. Gagosian, President & CEO of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership.

“These scholars are the future stewards of our ocean, and I know this experience encourages them to continue to learn how the ocean works and how to wisely use our ocean resources for generations to come,” said Gagosian in a statement.

The NOSB seeks to interest students in pursuing a college degree and future career in the ocean sciences.

Approximately 2,000 students from over 300 high schools participated in 2012.
