Governor Signs Supplemental Disaster Proclamation for Maui
By Wendy Osher
A supplemental disaster proclamation was issued for the County of Maui.
Governor Neil Abercrombie signed the second supplemental disaster proclamation yesterday that extends his earlier proclamations for Kaua’i and O’ahu to include Maui County.
Earlier this month heavy rain, high winds and flooding were reported across the island chain resulting in damage to roads and property. Heavy damage was reported in the East Maui areas of Hana and Hanawana on Maui.
The supplemental proclamation allows for any “necessary and appropriate steps” to be carried out; and provides for activation of civil defense and other emergency functions to ensure public health and safety.
“It has become necessary to supplement my Proclamations of March 6, 2012 and March 8, 2012, in order to provide additional assistance, protect the public health, safety, and welfare, and maintain the strength, resources, and economic life of the community,” the proclamation states.
The governor had also signed a disaster proclamation on March 2, which authorized the state Department of Transportation to begin emergency highway repair work on Kuhio Highway. The proclamation was issued following the partial collapse of a 15-foot diameter culvert running beneath the highway near Kilauea town on Kaua’i.
