Maui Employee Parking Lot Proposed on Mission Grounds

The County of Maui is proposing to construct a 67-stall employee parking lot on a vacant lot between the Bailey House Museum and Ka’ahumanu Church in Wailuku.

The proposed lot would take up more than a quarter of the 2.65-acre parcel, currently under lease from the Wailuku Union Church on a parcel commonly referred to as the “Mission Grounds.”

The area has been used for temporary parking for special events.  It has two homes on site and two buildings used for commercial space–all of which are located on the mauka portion of the property.

The County’s Public Works Department has prepared a Draft Environmental Assessment with a finding of no significant impact. 

The estimated project cost for improvements is $50,000, with a 30-day public comment period on the document ending on April 23, 2012.

Proposed improvements include the construction of driveway connections to the adjacent streets, internal roadway and aisles, and a pedestrian path and stairs to Aupuni Street.  The draft document notes the parking lot will be gravel with asphalt curbing. 

The County is also requesting necessary land use entitlements to develop the property.  Since the project is located within a Historic District, district approval and setback variance is required.
