Rescue crews from the Hana Fire Station assisted a 40-year-old man out of ʻOheʻo Gulch on Friday evening, June 8, 2012.

The man suffered an ankle injury about a mile up on the Waimoku Falls Trail, according to officials with the Maui Fire Department.

Authorities say bystanders assisted before rescue crews arrived by rigging a stretcher and carrying the man down the trail.

The man refused to be transported by medics on scene, and instead drove his personal vehicle to seek treatment, officials said.  The injury was not life-threatening.
