Ocean Waters Commercial Activity Bill Becomes Law
By Wendy Osher
An ocean waters commercial activity bill becomes law this month.
House Bill 2682 was introduced by Representative Jo Jordan who represents Waianae and Makaha on O’ahu.
The intent of the measure, Rep. Jordan said, was not to add more regulations, but to address certain commercial activities that were not regulated.
Until today, Rep. Jordan stated, commercial activity in public harbors fell under state regulation for the purpose of safety and fair business practices, but commercial activity in private harbors was not regulated at all.
“The issue is one of fairness,” said Rep. Jordan. The new law, Rep. Jordan states, “levels the playing field, proving a healthier business environment and greater protection of Hawaii’s ocean resources.”
