Strong Winds Continue at Haleakalā Summit
By Wendy Osher
A wind advisory continues for the summit of Haleakalā until 6 p.m. this evening, Monday, Jan. 7.
The National Weather Service cancelled the advisory for the rest of Maui County, but advised that winds will remain gusty today and tonight, especially for the summit area.
Forecasters say east winds over Haleakala will be 30 to 35 mph with localized gusts over 45 mph. The strongest winds are expected over exposed ridges.
The strong winds are being generated by high pressure northeast of the state. Winds are expected to diminish further into mid-week.
As a precautionary measure, motorists are advised to drive with caution, especially those operating high profile vehicles. Winds can also bring down tree branches and result in local power outages.
