A 22-year-old Lahaina man was airlifted out of Makamakaole trail on Maui yesterday after falling and injuring his back.

The incident was reported at 12:35 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12 in an area near mile marker 8 of the Kahekili Highway.

Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said the male hiker and four of his friends were about 45 minutes into the trail when the incident occurred.

Authorities say the Maui Fire Department’s Air-1 with Rescue-10 personnel airlifted the victim to a secured landing zone set up on the highway.  The man was then transported by Medics to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
