A Makawao man was charged with second degree attempted murder for his alleged involvement in an assault against a homeless woman in Lahaina early Tuesday morning, police said.

Calvin Borge, 49, was being held at the Maui Community Correctional Center in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Borge is accused of using an envelope opener to slit the victim’s neck during the incident.

Police say both Borge and the 53-year-old female victim were attending a holiday gathering at an apartment complex on Wainee Street when the incident was reported at 2:22 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

A police report prepared by Maui Detective Darrell Ramos described the attack as “unprovoked” saying the victim did not have any indication that she was about to be assaulted, and had “barely known” Borge.

According to statements to police, both the victim and Borge were conversing with each other briefly prior to the alleged assault.  Police say both had attended the gathering in the company of their respective fiancé/fiancée, and that the consumption of alcoholic beverages occurred before the alleged assault.

Witnesses told police that Borge approached the victim from the rear, got her in a rear neck hold, and used an envelope opener that had a semi-serrated blade to slit the front portion of the victim’s neck across her esophagus. The victim “shrieked and fell to the ground” where she was tended to by friends who were on scene.

Police reports indicate that the injured woman was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment, and was later released in satisfactory condition.
