Maui Fishers Invited to Talk Story with DLNR Chair

Fishermen and -women on Maui are invited to an informal talk story session with the chair of the Department of Land and Natural Resources, William Aila, Jr. on Friday night, March 22.

The session will run from 6 to 8 p.m. at Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahului.

State officials say it is an opportunity to share fishery-related concerns and have questions answered directly by the chairperson.

“It is our hope that we can work with the fishing community to come up with positive solutions to fishing issues in Hawaii,” said DLNR officials in a media release.

Officials from DLNR will also be on Maui this weekend for an open house and blessing of a new Community Fisheries Enforcement Unit patrol vessel.

The unit is part of a pilot program that is set to launch in Maui waters this spring, covering a 13 mile stretch of coastline from Hulu Island below Waihe’e to Baldwin Beach Park in Paia.

The blessing takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. this Saturday at the Kahului Boat Launch Ramp.
