A 50-year-old man from Vancouver, Wash. was pronounced dead after being found face-down in the water at Kamaole Beach Park III in South Maui yesterday, officials said.

Authorities from the Maui Fire Department say the man was swimming with his wife when the incident occurred at around 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9.

According to an incident report, the man was pulled to shore by his wife, with bystanders assisting him onto the beach where they started cardiopulmonary resuscitation before first-responders arrived on scene.

Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said Ocean Safety Lifeguards and fire personnel continued CPR on the victim with American Medical Response crews taking over patient care upon arrival.

Efforts to revive the man were unsuccessful, according to Chief Mainaga.
