Baldwin Boys, Saber Girls Win JV Championships

Sophomore sprinter Dylan Leigh powered the Baldwin High School boys to eclipse the 200-point total en route to winning the Maui Interscholastic League Junior Varsity Track and Field Championships, Friday, April 19, at the Satoki Yamamoto Track & Field Facility.

Leigh collected wins in the 100- (11.43), 200- (23.01) and 400-meter (54.80) dashes, while anchoring the Bears’ winning 4×100 relay. Leigh ran a personal best in the 200 and the 400 for the first time this year.

Baldwin rolled up 214 points, twice as much as runner-up Kamehameha Maui’s 107. Maui High was third with 61 points, followed by Lahainaluna’s 41.

Maui High scored 52 points in three distance events — 1,500, 800, and 3,000 — to win the girls division with 139 points. Baldwin was second with 116, followed by Seabury Hall’s 71 and King Kekaulike’s 53.

Seabury Hall’s Ally Smith was the meet’s other triple winner, topping the 1,500 in 5 minutes, 29.76 seconds, 400 in 63.16 and 200 in 27.12.

The Sabers’ Kule’a Sado won the girls 800 in 2:43.77, while teammate Shantel Longboy was third (2:51.09) and Rachel Landon fourth (3:00.21). Sado was second to Smith in the 1,500 at 5:51.41 and Longboy was third in 5:51.60.

Longboy later won the 3,000 run in 13:31.34, ahead of teammate Briana Berdel’s 13:39.21.

The Bears swept the boys pole vault, triple jump, and went 2-3-4 in the long jump. Baldwin collected 66 points from the three field events.

Kainoa Tom (12-0), Derick Leon (11-0) and Sean Fukuhara (10-6) were the Bears’ trio in the vault. Phillip Thomas (40-5.50), Kasey-Lee Keahi (36-10.5) and Brenden Cole Adachi (36-3.25) topped the triple jump and Ant Kahoohanohano-Davis (18-7.25), Thomas (18-7.25) and Keanan Luis (18-6.75) followed Kamehameha Maui’s Micah Ing (19-3.75) in the long jump.

Junior varsity double winners included:

* Keoni Frampton of Kamehameha Maui in the boys 1,500 (4:42.38) and 800 (2:11.64). Frampton beat Baldwin’s Anundre Paet in both races.

* Molokai’s Alexandria Simon won the girls 100 in 13.43, just nudging Baldwin’s Kelly Inouye (13.44). She also won the 300 hurdles in 55.38, beating teammate Hikilii Chow (55.96).

* Maui High’s Arvenjae Lacaden topped the boys ring events, winning the discus (123-8) and shot put (42-10).

* King Kekaulike’s Brooks Carillo won both the long jump (15-8.75) and triple Jump (32-7.75). Carillo went four inches better than her previous best in the long jump and it was her first time triple jumping.
