Maui’s Hiranaga Appointed to State Land Use Commission

Kent Hiranaga is currently a resident of Pāʻia, Maui. The new appointments bring to seven the number of members on the nine-seat commission, and restores the Land Use Commission’s ability to meet quorum following five resignations in July.

Hospice Maui Moves Forward With Plans for Expanded Service

Hospice Maui is proposing the development of a five-bedroom care facility adjacent to its existing offices on Mahalani Street. The organization anticipates that full hospice care in the proposed facility with room and board would cost less than a third of the cost associated with hospitalization.

Visitors to Maui Spend $206 Per Person Per Day, Up 10%

On Maui, higher daily spending in July of 2014 (up 10.3% to $206 per person) among the 225,727 visitors (up 0.2%) to Maui contributed to an 8.2% gain in visitor expenditures to $365.8 million.

2030 Electric Company Plan Aims to Reduce Bills by 20%

Highlights of the plan include: achieving more than 65% renewable energy; reducing electric bills by 20%; and nearly tripling the amount of distributed solar by 2030.

The project calls for the development of a mix of light industrial and business/commercial uses with approximately 226 apartment units on 75 acres of land mauka of the Piʻilani Highway in North Kīhei. The Draft EIS is subject to a 45-day public review and comment period that runs through October 7th.

Inouye Innovation Award at the Ke Alahele Education Fund Dinner Saturday night at the Grand Wailea Resort. Ramelb, a 2014 King Kekaulike High School graduate, was recognized for using technology in the campus STEMworks™ lab to design a paintbrush grip for special needs students.

A King Kekaulike High School graduate won the Innovation Award for his creation of a device for special needs students and those with severe disabilities that enables them to grip paintbrushes.

Maui County’s unemployment rate for July improved to 4.8%, down from the 5.o% rate reported a month earlier, and also down from the 5.1% recorded at the same time last year.
