County of Maui Offices Closed on Monday, Dec. 6

Due to ongoing severe weather, the County of Maui announced its offices will be closed today, Monday, Dec. 6, 2021.

Maui Weather Updates: Maui Flood WATCH Posted Through Tuesday Afternoon

The National Weather Service reports that flood waters have receded. Piʻilani Highway remains closed at Pahihi Gulch due to earlier flood damage. A Flood Watch remains in effect for Maui County through Tuesday afternoon.

UPDATE: Mililani vs Kamehameha Maui Girls Volleyball First-Round Match Rescheduled to Wednesday

The first-round match between Mililani and Kamehameha-Maui in the HHSAA Division I Girls Volleyball State Championship has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 8, 3:30 p.m. at the Kamehameha School-Maui campus. The match was rescheduled due to campus closures and unsafe travel conditions as severe weather pounded Maui County causing flash flooding and power outages. 

Kīhei Community Center Operating as Emergency Shelter

The Maui Emergency Management Agency in conjunction with the American Red Cross has opened the Kīhei Community Center as an emergency shelter to those affected by the heavy rain and flooding in South Maui.  The shelter is located at 303 East Līpoa Street in central Kīhei.

Maui Public Advised to Prepare for Flooding; Excessive Rain Expected Into Monday

“As this unstable system continues to deliver large amounts of rain to Maui County, please prepare your household before flooding begins,” said Maui Mayor Michael Victorino.  “If you are in a flood prone area, take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of you and your family.”

Update / OPEN: Hāna Highway Traffic Advisory in Pā‘ia

Police say Hāna Highway is closed fronting Bladwin Beach Park due to a motor vehicle collision. Motorists should avoid the area and use alternate routes. We also have reports of a power pole leaning over the roadway in the area.

Dec. 5, 2021 COVID-19 Update: 148 New Cases, 1 Death

In Maui County, the seven day average for new cases daily is 17, with a 1.7% test positivity rate over 14 days. This is -2% from Nov. 20 to Dec. 3, 2021. For every 100,000 residents in Maui County, there have been an average of 10.0 newly reported cases per day over the last seven days.

Flood WARNING for Maui Until 12:15 a.m., Molokaʻi Until 12:30 a.m.

At 6:25 p.m. HST, radar showed rain continuing to move over the slopes of Haleakalā from the south. Rain rates of 2-3 inches per hour were occurring over the Kaupō Gap area, and 1-2 inches per hour near ʻOheʻo Gulch. Heavy rainfall will also be moving over central and west Maui during the next several hours.

Volcano Watch – A Cloud of Ten Thousand Points: Terrestrial Laser Scanning of Halemaʻumaʻu

The modern workhorse for ground surveying is terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) using light detection and raging (LiDAR) instruments. LiDAR may sound familiar to longtime “Volcano Watch” readers, because the basic technique was described in a November 2020 article that discussed an aerial LiDAR survey at Kīlauea. TLS surveys are similar, with a ground-based instrument emitting laser pulses and measuring their return times after reflecting off topographic features.  

Maui Crime Nov. 21-27, 2021: Burglaries, Break-ins, Thefts

Maui police responded to 11 burglaries, 13 vehicle thefts and seven vehicle break-ins in Maui County over a seven day period from Nov. 21 to 27, 2021.
