Michael “Michi” Weiss of Vienna, Austria took the title in today’s XTERRA World Championship in Kapalua on Maui. The course had some surprise elements as defending champion, Conrad Stoltz of South Africa dropped out at mile two of the run, citing asthma.

Spectators can view the race along Fleming Beach and at the Transition Area/Finish Line, located on the poolside lawn at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua. Event organizers say the first place athlete is expected to finish at approximately 11:30 a.m. Event parking is at the ball field behind the preschool at Kapalua.

For a third consecutive year, Nick Walker won the Dukes Beach House 10K, finishing with a time of 40 minutes, 42 seconds. Walker also won the event in 2009 and 2010, when it was held in Makena. Van Vlerken was the first female finisher, and the third runner to finish the race behind Maui’s Paul Hopwood of Makawao who finished second with a time of 43:33.
