The sleeping giant from South Lono Avenue woke up Friday after 14 years of losing to Central Maui public-school rival Baldwin in Maui Interscholastic League football.

The Maui High School football team snapped a 27-game losing streak — that dated back 14 years — to Baldwin High Friday, beating the Bears 20-17 at War Memorial Stadium.

The Seabury Hall girls track team — and arguably the state’s best 1-2 tandem in the history of track and field in Hawaii — capped the 2014 Maui Interscholastic League season with a bang Saturday at the Yamamoto Track & Field Facility.

A young Kamehameha Schools Maui boys volleyball team pushed defending Maui Interscholastic League champion Baldwin to the brink of upset Wednesday before falling in five games, 24-26, 25-14, 25-12, 22-25, 17-15.

Baldwin High School’s Philip Thomas continued to find his groove Friday against Mililani, finishing with a double-double — 20 points and 10 rebounds — in the Bears’ 63-54 victory at the Neal Blaisdell Arena.

Third-seeded Baldwin High School played without its best player, Teva Eldridge, in the critical fourth quarter Thursday against Maryknoll and his absence ultimately proved too much to overcome as the Bears dropped their quarterfinal game to the Spartans, 66-61, at Radford Gymnasium.
