Update on grounded vessels off Maui: boats stabilized and pollution removal complete

The Coast Guard has concluded its response to two separate vessel grounding incidents off Maui, involving the Altego II in Lahaina on Jan. 8, and the Chaparral at Sugar Beach on Jan. 9, 2024.

2 Boats Grounded off Maui: in Lahaina and La Perouse

Firefighters on Maui responded to two separate boat grounding incidents on Sunday, July 26, 2015. A 20-foot fishing vessel was discovered on the rocks near La Perouse Bay in South Maui at around 4:56 a.m.; and a 30-foot sailboat was found on a reef just inside the wave break fronting 505 Front Street at around 3:08 p.m.

The three vessels, ranging in size from 30-40 feet, had apparently pulled from their moorings, and were in the process bf being battered by the high surf, authorities said.

Pacific Maid Catches Fire… Again

For the second time this month, the Pacific Maid vessel caught fire in waters off of Wahikuli State Park in West Maui. This time, the fire was ignited by torches, used by a salvage crew for cutting metal material.

4 Boats Adrift off West Maui Cause Commotion

Crews responded to multiple boating incidents off Maui’s West shore today, the first of which involved a fire aboard a 60-foot trawler.

A representative from Maui Fresh Fish, LLC, the company that owns the vessel, attempted to move it off the beach last night during high tide, but DLNR officials say strong winds and currents prevented them from doing so.
