Effective immediately, the County of Maui’s free Tow and Scrap vehicle recycling program will no longer accept hybrid or electric vehicles, according to the County Department of Environmental Management Environmental Protection & Sustainability Divison.

Free educational resources focusing on stormwater awareness and STEM learning are now available to Maui County schools through the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, Highways Maui District.

Students, teachers and family members of Kamehameha Schools ʻOhana collectively earned this year’s Adopt-A-Highway Dash for Trash Champions title for the annual Earth Month public service competition sponsored by the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, Highways Maui District.

A new mural on the Kūihelani Highway sound wall in Puʻunēnē was created by two Maui artists in collaboration with the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, Highways Maui District. Titled “Moʻolelo O Maui,” the 60’ wide x 9’ high artwork depicts the beloved story of Maui the demigod harnessing the sun.

Hundreds of volunteers from dozens of groups helped remove more than 2,000 bags of trash from state highways in Maui County in 2022, according to the State of Hawaiʻi, Department of Transportation Highways Division – Maui District.

The Mālama Maui Nui Go Green Recycling event continues this month at a new location.  The appointment-required event runs from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 15, 2020, in the parking lot mauka and behind the Lahaina District Court at 1870 Honoapiʻilani Highway in Lahaina.

From July 2018 through June 2019, a total of 7,043 used tennis balls were collected  and shipped to the mainland, where they found a new life as rubber crumbs  used in the construction of new tennis courts.

An estimated 1,305 gallons of wastewater overflowed along Amala Place in Kahului on Thursday morning, Feb. 9, 2017.
