Brush fire near Kahului Airport burns 11 acres; forced temporary closure of runways

An estimated 11 acres of brush burned in a fire on fallow agricultural land near the Kahului Airport Wednesday morning, May 28, 2025.  The fire was first reported at 10:18 a.m., and was brought under control shortly after at 11:39 a.m.

Crews respond to brush fire in Kahului near Lihikai School

A brush fire reported off of Kunu Place in Kahului earlier this afternoon was extinguished. Fire officials say the blaze burned an area less than 100 feet by 50 feet in size, and was doused just a few minutes after Engine 1 arrived on scene without any other units assisting.  No damages were reported.

Update: Maui fire officials say crews responded to a small brush fire down in the gulch vicinity of Waiehu Beach Road and Kaʻae Rd.  Maui Fire Department Public Information Officer Chris Stankis tells Maui Now that the fire was contained by initial arriving units. Witnesses reported heavy smoke in the area at around 2:20 p.m.
