Maui Fire Department crews from Kahului and Kula responded Sunday, June 2, to a 4:30 p.m. alarm for a two-acre fire at the Central Maui Landfill.

Wailuku Restroom Fire Causes $10,000 in Damage

The incident was reported at 7:35 p.m. at a 600 square foot restroom located near the tennis courts, between the stadium and the swimming pool. Maui Fire officials say the fire started in a rubbish can, and then spread to the structure.

Greek Visitor Rescued After Night in Olinda

The 30-year-old woman from Greece had gone hiking on Kahakapao Road on Friday. A ground search was initiated based on information provided by the hiker via her personal cell phone, but the woman could not provide accurate directions.

UPDATE: Kapalua Fire 90% Contained

A fire in the forestry area above Kapalua on Maui was 90% contained by nightfall on Monday, but fire officials say it is not considered under control. The assessment was made at 6:40 p.m. as ground crews continued to battle hot spots within the fire perimeter.

The Kihei man was found about one mile above the park by a fellow hiker on Sunday morning, 3 days after falling and losing consciousness. Unable to walk, the man dragged himself down the river where he was eventually found.
