The County of Maui Office of Recovery invites commercial property owners who lost property in Lahaina during the 2023 Maui wildfires to attend a dedicated commercial permitting workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Morgado Hall at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului.

Maui County hopes to launch a program to buy properties makai of Front Street and create a connected waterfront to protect against flooding and create more open space and shoreline access.

Work on the County of Maui’s pre-fire Front Street Improvements Project will continue with updates to features of the historical roadway between the intersections of Baker to Pāpalaua streets and Lahainaluna Road to Dickenson Street. The stretch of Front Street from Lahainaluna Road to Papelekane Street remains closed.

With the end of temporary federal emergency assistance now set for the end of next month, Mayor Richard Bissen advised Lahaina wildfire survivors Wednesday night to take a permanent housing alternative, if available.

The draft guidelines are the latest effort by the county to move forward with rebuilding in the town’s business district, which overlaps a sensitive historic area that has seen little activity since the August 2023 wildfires.

In coordination with state updates to its Lahaina Small Boat Harbor, certain County of Maui streets in Lahaina town near the harbor will reopen for daytime (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.) access starting Dec. 15, 2025, according to the County Office of Recovery. These streets have been closed and under repair since the 2023 Maui wildfires.

Maui County recently released design options for the once-bustling business district of Front Street that include plans to keep it as a two-lane road open to pedestrians and cars.

Bank of Hawaiʻi marked the grand opening of its new Lahaina Branch on Maui on Monday with a private blessing ceremony and a donation of $100,000 to provide support to Lahaina residents who are at risk of losing their homes to foreclosure. Its previous location on Papalaua Street was destroyed in the 2023 wildfires.

While residents who have been living in the Lahaina burn zone are happy to see the rebuilding starting to pick up, it is “bittersweet” knowing that it will never be the same as it was.
