Haleakalā National Park water safe for consumption 

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Health indicated the detection of 2,4-D did not make the water unsafe as the levels of 2,4-D were well below the EPA and State Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 70 parts per billion (ppb), and no 2,4-D has been detected in the bracket samples. 

Newly completed management plan reduces air tours by 54% at Haleakalā

The National Park Service and the Federal Aviation Administration have completed an Air Tour Management Plan for Haleakalā National Park, which authorizes up to 2,224 air tours per year, a 54% reduction from the existing average of 4,824 flights per year. It identifies no-fly days as  Sundays and Wednesdays.

Concerns and comments welcome on draft air tour management plan for Haleakalā

A 30 day public comment period starts today on a draft air tour management plan for Haleakalā National Park on Maui.  The National Park Service and Federal Aviation Administration are seeking input from anyone interested or concerned about air tours over Haleakalā.

Phase 2 excavation contract awarded, remediation continues at Haleakalā fuel spill site

A contract for Phase 2 excavation work has been awarded as remediation efforts continue at Haleakalā.  Officials with the Space Surveillance Squadron hosted a community forum this week to provide an update on the status of efforts at the Maui Space Surveillance Complex where a lightning strike and equipment malfunction resulted in the release of 700 gallons of fuel  at the facility in January. 

Phase 1 excavation complete at Haleakalā following 700 gallon fuel spill

Workers removed approximately 43 sacks of soil estimated at 84,000 pounds, replacing it with soil gathered at a nearby site. The soil removed is being safely stored at the summit of Haleakalā until a remediation plan is approved in Phase 3.

The Friends of Haleakalā National Park hosts a service trip on April 4 at the park’s plant nursery in the Summit District of Haleakalā National Park, from 9 a.m. to noon.
