Haleakalā National Park closed due to severe weather
Beginning after sunset Thursday, March 12, 2026, Haleakalā National Park will be closed due to dangerous weather conditions. The closure will go into effect for both the Summit District and Kīpahulu District.

Hawaiian Electric teams continue to monitor weather conditions that may call for a Public Safety Power Shutoff in parts of Maui and Hawai‘i Island this week.
Public Safety Power Shutoff watch: Hawaiian Electric monitoring wildfire risk conditions this week
Hawaiian Electric is monitoring developing weather conditions which are likely to lead to an increased risk of wildfires in parts of Maui County and Hawaiʻi Island later this week. Customers in these areas are urged to initiate their own emergency plans should a Public Safety Power Shutoff be necessary, and to prepare for the possibility of extended power outages Monday through Thursday.

Hawaiian Electric has re-energized all West Maui circuits impacted by the Public Safety Power Shutoff program. At this time, all customers who can have power restored safely should have electricity. However, a PSPS Watch remains in effect for parts of Maui and Hawaiʻi Island.
Gov. Green issues Emergency Proclamation for Tropical Storm Hone
Gov. Josh Green, M.D., has issued an Emergency Proclamation Relating to Tropical Storm Hone, to make state resources available as needed. “Given the high winds caused by Hone and existing drought conditions, it is critical that the state and counties be prepared to rapidly deploy personnel and resources such as the National Guard to respond to any wildfires that may ignite and threaten life, safety or property,” according to the EP.
Red Flag Warning until 6 p.m. for leeward areas of all Hawaiian Islands
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Red Flag Warning for wind and low relative humidity, which is in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today for the leeward areas of all Hawaiian Islands.
West Maui public school campuses to remain closed through next week
HIDOE’s four public school campuses in Lāhainā will remain shut down for an additional week, through Friday, Aug. 18.
