Lahaina Man Critically Injured in Honoapiʻilani Crash

The 52-year-old Lahaina man was traveling towards Māʻalaea when the vehicle he was operating crossed the center line and sideswiped a vehicle carrying four people that was traveling in the opposite direction.

Police have since identified the man who died at the scene of a multiple vehicle collision reported west of the highway tunnel near Papalaua Wayside Park on Thursday morning, May 9, 2013.

Fire crews from Ladder 3 out of Lahaina responded to a report of the fire at 2:40 p.m. near mile marker 14 of the Highway along the mauka side of the road.

Motorcycle Accident Quickly Cleared on Honoapiilani

By 12:50 a.m., the Highway was completely open in both directions, and traffic was allowed to resume its normal two-lane flow. The accident was reported near mile marker 11, on the Lahaina side of the pali tunnel.

Honoapiilani Accident Impacts Overnight Traffic

The Honoapiilani Highway is now open following an accident that forced the closure of the road for about two hours overnight. The closure went into effect at 1:55 a.m. on the Honoapiilani Highway between Akahele Street and Lower Honoapiilani Road. Details of the accident are pending release.

Officials say the fire was called under control by 1:56 p.m., and the highway was reopened at 2:32 p.m. Mainaga said the area involved was approximately 100 yards long by 20 feet wide. The cause, he said, is undetermined at this time.

When the pick-up truck effected a right turn onto Wahikuli Road in front of the moped, the moped collided with the right front fender of the pick-up truck, police said. Medic 4 arrived on scene at 11:39 a.m. and found the patient unresponsive and with traumatic head injuries.

Maui motorists experienced several slow-downs throughout the day. On the Honoapiilani Highway, two accidents were reported on Thursday afternoon. On the Kahekili Highway and South Kihei Road, heavy ponding was reported.

Maui police are investigating the suspected involvement of speed and drugs as contributing factors in an early morning head-on collision on the Honoapiilani Highway that left two Lahaina women hospitalized in critical condition.
